SOP: Nighttime & Low-Visibility Protocols

Policy Purpose: To establish mandatory, elevated safety measures for conducting battery replacements during night shifts, heavy rain, fog, or snow. When ambient lighting and driver visibility are compromised, standard roadside protocols must be aggressively scaled up to protect the technician.
1. Enhanced High-Visibility Gear
A standard dark green uniform is practically invisible on a rainy night. You must make yourself impossible to miss.
Mandatory Outerwear: A Class 2 or Class 3 reflective high-visibility safety vest or heavy rain jacket must be worn as the outermost layer. It must have 360-degree reflective striping.
Hands-Free Lighting: Holding a flashlight while trying to unbolt a battery is dangerous and inefficient. Technicians must wear a high-lumen, weather-resistant LED headlamp. This keeps your hands free and ensures your immediate workspace is always illuminated.
Reflective Layering: Ensure your rain pants or lower-body gear also feature reflective elements. Drivers' headlights are aimed low; reflective striping near the knees and ankles catches light fastest.
2. Strategic Vehicle Illumination
Your service vehicle is your primary warning beacon. How you light it up dictates how approaching traffic will react.
Hazards & Strobes: Four-way hazard lights must be activated immediately. If your vehicle is equipped with approved amber warning strobes or a roof-mounted light bar, they must be turned on before you exit the cab.
The High-Beam Danger: Do not leave your service vehicle's high beams or forward-facing LED light bars on if they are pointed toward oncoming traffic. Blinding an approaching driver drastically increases the chance they will become disoriented and swerve into your work zone. Use low beams or fog lights only.
Work Lights: Position a magnetic, battery-powered LED work light directly under the customer's hood. Do not rely solely on ambient streetlights, as shadows can hide severe terminal corrosion or frayed wiring.
3. Expanding the Safety Perimeter
At night or in heavy rain, stopping distances double, and driver reaction times plummet. Your warning cones must reflect this.
Extended Cone Placement: Increase the distance of your warning perimeter. Place your furthest cone a minimum of 75 to 100 feet behind your service vehicle to give approaching drivers ample time to change lanes.
LED Flares (Highly Recommended): Standard orange cones can get lost in the spray of heavy rain. Technicians should utilize flashing LED traffic pucks or electronic flares placed alongside or on top of the cones for maximum visibility.
4. Managing Wet Weather Electrical Hazards
Water and bare electrical terminals are a dangerous combination.
Keeping it Dry: If you are working in a heavy downpour, attempt to shield the open engine bay. You can use a small, portable pop-up canopy, or coordinate with the customer to hold an umbrella over the battery tray while you perform the swap.
Towel Drying: Before removing the old battery, use shop towels to dry off the top of the battery and the terminal clamps. This prevents dirty, conductive water from dripping into the battery tray or creating a bridge between the positive and negative posts.
Slipping Hazards: Wet running boards, muddy shoulders, and slick asphalt increase the risk of dropping a 50-pound AGM battery. Ensure you have secure footing before lifting, and use two hands or a proper battery strap.
5. The "No-Go" Call for Extreme Low Visibility
No dispatch is worth a technician's life.
The Abort Criteria: If you are dispatched to a highway shoulder during a torrential downpour, dense fog, or a snowstorm where visibility is reduced to just a few car lengths, do not initiate service.
The Relocation: Call the customer and instruct them to call a tow truck to move the vehicle to a well-lit gas station, covered parking garage, or a safe residential street.
